Chatel and the Portes du SoleilChatel is located about an hour's drive from Geneva (8 hours from Calais) in the Haute-Savoie region of the French Alps. Situated at the head of the
wooded Dranse Valley, Chatel is an attractive old village where traditional
style ski chalets rub shoulders with working farms.
|
 |
|
In the village there is everything one could need including grocery shops, fine wine/local produce,
banks, garages, newsagents etc. At last count there were over 20 restaurants and half a dozen
bars. There is also a wide selection of shops selling winter sports gear. The village remains
very French and is popular with visitors from France, Belgium and the Netherlands as well as from the UK. |
 |
|
The village is part of the main Portes du Soleil ski circuit and has access to over 650km of prepared pistes that straddle the French/Swiss border.
From Chatel there is easy access to Avoriaz and Morzine in France, and Champery
in Switzerland. Les Tyroliens is well placed between the village itself and the Linga
ski lift, being about 900m from either. |
 |
|
The easiest way to get around Chatel
is to use the free buses that pass by the apartment. The service is very
frequent as it closes the gap in the main Portes du Soleil circuit between
the Linga and Super Chatel lifts. An evening service also operates to allow
guests to access events organised by the resort, such as night skiing and
skating. |
 |
|
Ski the Portes du SoleilThe local slopes at Chatel offer over 80km of prepared pistes and are
served by 41 lifts. As well as the local slopes, Chatel is part of the main
Portes du Soleil circuit where skiers have access to over 650km of prepared
pistes served by over 200 lifts.
|
 |
|
Experts will be challenged by the steep on and off-piste runs above
Linga and Plaine Dranse as well as the “Swiss Wall” leading from Avoriaz
into Switzerland. Intermediates will have the whole of the Portes du
Soleil to explore; those of moderate ability should be capable of doing
the whole circuit with some of the best intermediate skiing in Chatel
itself in the Linga sector and above Super Chatel. Beginners are well
catered for at Super Chatel and at Pré-la- Joux; the village of Chatel
itself has a couple of nursery slopes on (summer) pasture. |
 |
|
Restaurants and entertainment
Both the village and the slopes have plenty to offer in the way of eating
out. Within a short stroll of the apartment there are several restaurants
(French/Italian). At the bottom of the Linga lift, approximately 800km from
the apartment, there is also a decent selection of places to dine as well as
shops for hiring equipment etc.
|
 |
|
In the centre of the village itself there are over 15 restaurants, the choice
ranges from the traditional Haute Savoie fare at the Vieux Four to the La
Galettiere crepery. Dining can be as formal or as informal as is desired.
The bar scene is lively with at least one British style pub and
an assortment of regular French bars. |
 |
|
Ski SchoolsThere are 6 ski and snowboard schools in Chatel,
offering a variety of courses and approaches to instruction. English
speaking guides and instructors are available. Facilities for children are good with most Ski schools offering products
tailored to children. The Marmottons nursery will look after children during
the day with a range of activities including sledging, igloo making,
tubing as well as skiing/boarding lessons. |
